Children

Children are the desired result of the union between a man and woman. In some cases the groom’s family will check the marriage bed to assure that the bride was a virgin. The parents of the couple would prefer that there is no sexual relationship until after the marriage. The exception to this case would be the parents of the groom wanting to make sure the future wife can have children. Pregnancy is the only sure sign that a woman can have a baby. If not a virgin, it is desirable on the part of a couple getting married that the woman be pregnant before marriage to assure that there will be children. It is believed that it is more likely that the woman will not become pregnant if she gets married before being pregnant. It is considered normal if a woman can not conceive after marriage that the husband should have children with other women. The way the new wife is treated by the groom’s parents is determined by whether she was a virgin or was pregnant by their son prior to marriage, or whether she gets pregnant within the first year of marriage.

Barren women are considered to be werewolves, or the equivalent, who destroy the lives of children. The community calls them “mules” and they are generally humiliated. Men are also humiliated if the wife has had a child by another man before they were married but cannot conceive with their husband. Married or not, men and women are classed in the above ways if they do not have children.

Generally there is a child born during the first year of the marriage or union, if not, problems occur in the marriage or with the contract. Most women are pregnant or have already had a child at the time of the marriage. Couples desire an equal number of male and female children, which spreads the workload among the family.

Children are not named until they are a month old. The exact time of birth is kept secret because the mother is vulnerable to spiritual attack on the 41st day after giving birth (the number of days varies with the area). This is the day the mother is able to bathe for the first time since giving birth. Most women will wait for more than 41 days before bathing, as a precaution. The location where the afterbirth was buried is kept secret to protect the child and mother. The linens must be washed by a trusted friend or relative who would keep the secret. This information is key for a voodoo priest or priestess in treating a person.

Women have 7 to 10 children during their lifetime. Children are a form of social security. Once married, a woman and her husband always respond to the needs of the woman's parents first. The more female children who reach adulthood, the greater the resources for the parents in the future. Male children who have the capacity to provide for all the parents may provide more than their sisters. The parents sacrifice for the children until they become adults at which time the children are responsible to provide for the parents.

Children are disciplined according to their age or capacity to understand. A young child with little understanding will be humored instead of disciplined. As the child understands more about what is right and wrong then they are disciplined. Children are to respect and obey their parents. A child is considered ill mannered if he looks an adult in the eye. Adults seek to make children happy, and do not want a child to go away unsatisfied. When a child asks for something and they do not get it, they threaten to leave. They will say "I am going to leave if you don't give it to me". This is to encourage the person to give the child what they want. This can lead to misunderstanding the role of discipline in the life of a child.
